Wood transition

We're getting ready to show you our new floors (yay!) but I wanted to share a quick post about this transition step leading into the living room.  Our flooring company said this piece is real wood and more sturdy than laminate so they didn't think it was a good idea to replace it. I agreed. So I decided to stain it to match the new flooring.  Here is a before shot:

And of course while I'm taking pictures of the steps, my daughter is exploring the freshly emptied hutch.  Leave it to kids to find unexplored territory!  Now it was time to get her to bed so I could sand the step transition pieces.

I sanded them with my rotary sander and also hand sanded with 220 grit sand paper.  Once they were nice and raw, I used ebony stain from Minwax and stained them with a cloth. It took three coats to get it this dark.  

The final step, which I'll complete tomorrow includes three light coats of Minwax Polycrylic Semi-Gloss sealer.  This will give it a nice hard durable finish for lots of stepping on.  I'm happy I decided to leave these wood transitions there. They match the floors great.

Can't wait to show you the new floors! We're beyond excited to have our house semi-back to normal.  We also can't wait to show you the whole kitchen once it's finished. Just waiting on new countertops and a new tile backsplash.
