Cottage Grove

I gave the Master Bathroom a little refresh over this past week by painting the cabinets a new color.   This green just spoke to me at the hardware store. It's called Cottage Grove by Magnolia Home.

It was my first time using this type of paint.  I have to say, it has it's pros and cons.  The pros are that it seemed to level well and not show the brush strokes.  The color is beautiful. The cons are that it took me three coats to get it completely opaque.  The verdict is still out on how well it will stay on. I did sand the existing painted cabinets but I did not use a primer.

The green cabinets really feel fresh in here and go well with my existing rose artwork.  I also updated the bathroom with a new rug and Green chenille mushroom stool.

A new soap dispenser in a pretty pink glass and toothbrush holder add a bit more color to the counter. The black and white hand towels from Rachel Zoe are fun too.   I would like to save up and replace the faucets in this bathroom eventually and the light fixtures above the mirrors.  That is on my to-do list.

Seating in the bathroom, it turns out makes the whole space feel more cozy.

Brass is the new Chrome

In our old house, built in the 1980's, I couldn't wait to spray paint all the brass hardware a nice Oil Rubbed Bronze.  It was the outdated kind of shiny brass that was so popular back then.  It's made a huge comeback, but you can tell it looks different now. There is a richness to it and modern lines. Our guest bathroom down stairs keeps evolving. I thought I was finished with it, until it got a new door. An old door to be exact.  I found a nice solid wood door at the Restore in Durham with a pretty crystal doorknob.  I spent a week sanding it, removing old paint with Paint Stripper, and finally adding a shiny gray paint to it.  That's what kick started me to add other hints of pretty brass to the room

The Process of buying an old door and putting it in was a bit more daunting than I expected. First it was slightly too tall. I could not find an exact match, so it needed to be sawed to the correct height.  Then I had to purchase Citristrip, Mineral Spirits, several type of scrapers, sand paper, rubber gloves, plastic sheeting, a big bag of rags, and destroyed a pair of Converse shoes in the process.  This paint stripping process took several tries. The door had about 5 coats of old paint that was tedious to remove.

You basically paint this Citristrip on and let it sit and do the work. It definitely helps to have the project over plastic because when you scrape the stuff off you need to have clean up be easy.

Once I got most of the paint off with the scrapers, I cleaned it with mineral spirits and began using sand paper to remove what paint remained. Even still you can see by the following photo that it's not completely smooth, but we tried.  Maybe it just gives it character?  We cleaned the brass handle with Brasso to shine it back up.

You won't believe that I actually spray painted every single bit of Chrome in this bathroom gold and ended up then buying more paint stripper and removing some of it later because too much brass was not a good thing either.  For example I painted the edges of the shower gold and it ended up looking like an out dated shower!   This is the inside, where I left it, but removed the outside gold.

Back to Chrome on the outside.

The Shower head, controls and outside handle got several coats of paint, plus a primer and a sealer.

My favorite part is the new brass faucet.

I found the vintage inspired rug from Cost Plus World Markets. I never go in that store but decided to see if they had a rug that could tie in the wall color and brass hardware.

If you don't already know, hardware can serve more than one purpose of functionality. It can also be beautiful and decorative. This towel holder from Anthropologist fills that ticket.  Taking down the old towel rod proved to be quite difficult though. I had to cut a piece of wood and paint it the color of the walls to make the new one work as well.

I forgot to mention that the new door also has the same color as the walls and now trim too.  We added a gold deadbolt too since the keyhole lock on the outside doesn't work with the old frame.

This little bamboo stool is a nice touch for guests who would like a seat in the shower.

I'm happy the bathroom is finally finished because using spray paint is highly not recommended (always wear a respirator mask and open the window and run a fan in the window if you can.)

It's almost Halloween time too -this bathroom is going to look quite spooky at night. I need to get out the red lipstick to write something on that mirror.

Moody Powder Room

The little ones are back in school and Mommy has her paint brush back out. I had a can of paint I was going to use in the game room for an accent wall but decided against that. The downstairs guest bath needed some paint, so here we go. I painted all 5 walls. Who wants to tape off 9' ceilings?? I'd rather just paint them. This color is beautiful. It's called Benjamin Moore's Narragansett Green. It's part of their historical collection. I can see why. I don't think I will ever tire of it.  I used a Satin finish so there's some sheen but not too much.

I love that the color can look almost black but with light the green comes out.

I found this cute ceramic trash bin at TJ Maxx. The wood bottom and floral design are so pretty.

This bathroom can change with the seasons. I can add a floral shower curtain or change out this rug. The colors are timeless and neutral.  I'm especially excited for Fall and Halloween decorating. Who wants to play Bloody Mary in here?

Master Bathroom updates

In the Master bath I added some new touches that I think give it a much brighter happier feel.  I painted the walls white in a Satin Finish first off. Because who likes Flat paint in a bathroom?  I made this cute little cafe curtain in a Navy blue pointelle fabric to create privacy without sacrificing the warm morning light that pours in.  Joe framed out both of the mirrors in a pine wood that we stained gray. We added gold and pink hardware from Anthropologie and added some artwork.  The rug is from Target by Nate Berkus.

BEFORE

For the light fixtures we kept the existing ones, but removed the glass shade and painted them gold and black and added these cute huge vintage light bulbs.  The interior doors also got light gray paint.

It didn't take much to give this bathroom an upgrade. Simple things like paint, cute hardware, etc. can spruce anything up. :)

Happy weekend!

Guest Bath

Down stairs in the guest room bath there have been a few changes, but nothing too drastic. This is one space where I really want to add wallpaper, but after wall papering our dining room, we are on a hiatus! Plus it's just so expensive so we need to budget for it.  I do like how it currently looks though so not in a hurry with what to do with the walls.

So this room, since we moved in has gotten a new light fixture, new hardware on the cabinets, a wood frame around the mirror, some art work, a new rug, and faux wood blinds.

I'll keep you posted when we decide what to do with the walls and if I ever upgrade that faucet. :)

Leopard Master Bath

I'm so glad I decided to hang on to the leopard stencil I won from Royal Design Studio that I once used in my daughter's room.  Spinning ideas around for a cute (and cheap) bathroom makeover I thought this room called for something fun and exciting. It literally cost almost nothing.

The whole bathroom went from "Agreeable Gray" by Sherwin Williams to Snow Bound by Sherwin Williams in a Semi-Gloss finish. The reason I changed the wall color was because it was painted in a flat paint, which as you know is very hard to clean and shows every mark.  Once it was totally white, I thought a black leopard print would look great.

The stencil I used is from Royal Design Studio. I used a round foam paint brush to apply the paint. I used Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in the color "Carbon."  Let me say, the process of stenciling this tiny bathroom took forever! I had to do one section at a time and let it dry. Otherwise I was smearing black paint when I placed the stencil sheet over the overlapping parts.  I would do only 2-4 sections a day, so it took almost two weeks to finish.  When I was finished, I went back with a regular paint brush to touch up each spot. Then I went back in with white paint to touch up any smears.

Today I shopped for pretty flowers and decided to give it a go designing my own bouquet. Do you think I have a future in floral design? :)

For the art I found a Hawaii and California image that I printed on Card Stock and framed with white picture frames from Michaels.

Did you notice my gold handle on the toilet?  I painted it with acrylic craft paint.  So far so good. It adhered really well.

The light fixture was a fun DIY project. Joe simply detached the mushroom light that was in there and took off the glass dome cover. I spray painted it gold and then I strung 20 - 16 mm white wooden beads onto 15 strands of fishing line.  We drilled 15 holes and tied them on the inside. I gathered it and tied it off with white thread.  When I was looking for light fixtures, beaded ones were upwards of $250.  Instead I spent $4. :)

A reminder of how the bathroom looked when I started. Snooze.

Hopefully soon I can show you the rest of the bathroom.

Happy February!
