DIY - Child Silhouette art

Here's a little DIY project that's easy to do in a few hours. Making silhouette's of your children is a great way to capture their innocent profiles when they're little to cherish forever.

For this project I got my children to stand still (good luck!) ;-) and then take their photo from the side. Try to take several photos so you can get that perfect side angle.  After the photos (digital is best, for this project) are taken you upload them to your computer. Find the best photo and open it with Adobe Photoshop or a similar photo editing program.  We used the pen tool and traced around the face including neck and this removes all the background. Next we changed the image to black.  Once your image is a silhouette, you can have them printed on photo paper from any photo developer. We used Target to order our prints. We used a Matte finish so they look less like a glossy photo and more like a painted image. When they arrived, I used an Exacto knife to cut out the image.  Then I used some scrap book paper and a glue stick to glue the images directly to the paper.  I framed the sheet in a black square frame that I purchased from Michaels.

Instant Art! We gave similar portraits to the grandparents for Christmas. They loved them!  Now that we have three kids I need to update our version.

Have fun!
